Research Triangle Park
Research Triangle Park (RTP) is the largest and most successful planned research park in the United States and is a priceless resource for the Durham business community.
Located on 7,000 acres of North Carolina pine forest, nearly 75% of the Park's property and 95% of its corporate enterprises are located in Durham County. Organizations in the Park represent some of America's and the world's largest and most prestigious corporate and governmental organizations engaged in scientific and technological research. There are currently over 40,000 persons employed by the 130+ firms in the Park. Established to enhance North Carolina's economic growth, the Research Triangle Park is an amazing success story. Developed for corporate and governmental entities, the Park is designed for organizations primarily engaged in research and development activities. Although manufacturing is allowed in the Park, it must be an outgrowth of the ongoing research and development taking place at a company's facility.
One of the primary assets of the Park is the close proximity of three doctoral research universities -- Duke University in Durham, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. These Division I research institutions provide excellent technical skills and resources to RTP- based organizations. By adding the excellent technical and community colleges in the area, such as Durham Technical Community College, the end result is an unparalleled environment for R&D and high-tech manufacturing.
Special state-supported initiatives such as the MCNC (the Microelectronics Center of North Carolina), the North Carolina Supercomputing Center and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center are located within the Park. Other strong drawing cards are the noted contract research organization RTI International, the National Humanities Center, and the US EPA's largest operation outside of Washington D.C.
