Description:

Join the Durham Young Professionals in celebrating the holiday season...

...while you give back to the Durham community!

Guests will enjoy a festive holiday hors d'oeuvres reception and excellent drink specials at one of Durham’s hottest new spots, Six Plates Wine bar!

While you network with other area professionals and enter to win some great prizes, you can spread the holiday cheer by helping a Durham child in need.

In support of the Durham Public Schools Bookmark program, DYP and Six Plates will be collecting elementary age appropriate new or gently used books.  The BookMark program is designed to improve literacy and reading levels in Durham’s elementary school children by providing books to those who may not have books in the home or easy access to the Public Library.

At the Holiday Party, DYP will be trying to gather as many books as possible, so we ask every attendee to bring one or more books to the holiday reception. If you cannot bring a book, a $5 donation will be accepted for admission.

As an added bonus, for each additional book you bring, you will be given another entry into the DYP raffle, increasing your chance to win lots of great prizes!  Entries are unlimited, so be generous and help a Durham child this holiday season!  The drawing will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the event, and you must be present to win.

A special thanks to our event host:

About Six Plates Wine Bar:

Six Plates is a laid back, yet upscale wine bar featuring small plates and wine selections, with ever changing farm to table cuisine built on local farm partnerships. Six Plates features 160 wines by the bottle, 10 wines by the glass which change daily, and on Tuesday, 4 wine selections for only $4 a glass. Not a wine lover? You’ll also find around 30 award winning beers by the bottle. To learn more about Six Plates and the people behind this new Durham favorite, visit their website at http://www.sixplates.com/

About the BookMark Program:

BookMark is a new initiative designed to place new or gently used books in the hands of elementary children in our district.  Studies show that children lose up to three months of what they learned the previous year over the summer, and reading levels decrease up to 25 percent.  Research also has demonstrated that this can be avoided simply by having children read four books over the summer. DPS wants to give books to children who may not have books in the home or easy access to the Public Library.  Depending on the number of books received, DPS will distribute books to schools with the highest low-income student populations.  The first books will go to students in schools with 75% or more students on Free & Reduced Meals. Those schools are: Spaulding, Eastway, Smith, Merrick-Moore, Glenn, Burton, Bethesda, Fayetteville Street, and Lakewood.  For more information about the BookMark Program, go to: http://www.dpsnc.net/community/get-involved/leave-your-mark2014bookmark
